Harmony Class for Pianists and Guitarists (6-7:00 pm)

This class will introduce students to the essential elements of the Barry Harris harmonic pedagogy. We will explore chords not as static entities, but as opportunities for linear movement. Ideally students should have basic facility on their instrument and know basic chords and scales (i.e. major, minor, diminished, etc.). All are welcome.

Vocal Class (7-8:30 pm)

This class will give vocalists the opportunity to work on two jazz standards in each class with the assistance of a professional rhythm section. Emphasis will be placed on singing the melody correctly and being in synch with the rhythm section. This class will be a good opportunity for vocalists to “get inside” the feeling of each tune, and to benefit from the experience of hearing other vocalists interpret these same songs.

Improvisation Class (8:30-10 pm)

This class will introduce instrumentalists to Barry Harris’ unique pedagogical approach to bebop improvisation. We will learn scales, arpeggios, chords, and Barry Harris’ unique concepts on how to modify and employ these building blocks in the context of playing an improvised solo. Students should have technical proficiency on their respective instruments and know their major and minor scales in all keys.
