Join us for the Barry Harris Institute of Jazz Summer Intensive at The New School,
June 23-27, 2025, from 9 AM to 5 PM!
Workshop sessions will be held at Arnie Lawrence Hall (55 W 13th St, NY) as well as in Room 624 of the same facility.
Workshop instructors include top flight musicians and educators like :
David Glasser, Howard Rees, Philip Bingham, Richard Clements, Michael Weiss,
Steve Ash, James Austin Jr., André “Chez” Lewis, Isaac Raz, Katie Cosco, and others!
Expect harmony masterclasses, improvisation workshops, singer sessions, and a final concert at Ernst C. Stiefel Hall on Friday from 6 PM to 8 PM. In addition to the workshop programming, practice and rehearsal rooms on the premises will be available to participants from 8a to 6p each day. There are also opportunities for private or semi-private instruction from instructors (interested participants can reach out directly to the instructor with whom they wish to arrange a lesson). The Barry Harris Summer Intensive is organized by the Barry Harris Institute of Jazz in collaboration with The New School. This is a must attend event for jazz students, educators, professionals, enthusiasts, and anyone interested in exploring Barry Harris’ unique pedagogical ideas!

Steve Ash is a highly regarded New York jazz pianist originally from Pittsburgh. In addition to his formal training at Indiana University, he studied with Dr. Barry Harris extensively and his stylings reveal his deep respect for the tradition. Steve has performed with numerous jazz luminaries and he appears regularly at top NYC jazz clubs.
James is an accomplished jazz pianist and bandleader who studied extensively with Dr. Barry Harris. He was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition and has performed globally with many acclaimed artists. James teaches at NJPAC’s Jazz for Teens program, the Thurnauer School of Music, and he leads harmony workshops at Rutgers–Newark.
Phil is a celebrated pianist, composer, arranger, and music educator. He is Minister of Music Emeritus of Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn. He has worked with the All City High School Chorus, Jazz House Kids, and NYC school districts as an educator, conductor, and music consultant. Phil’s experience as a conductor includes performances of the Barry Harris Orchestra and Choir. In addition, he has led music education workshops across the sacred and secular communities.
With over 45 years of experience, Richard Clements is a veteran jazz pianist and bandleader. He studied in New York with Dr. Barry Harris starting in the 1980’s. Over the course of his career he has worked with jazz legends like Clifford Jordan, Abbey Lincoln, and Charlie Persip. He currently leads a weekly bebop session at the 11th Street Bar and he conducts a regular piano workshop at Bill’s Place in Harlem.
Katie Cosco is an accomplished NYC-based jazz pianist and accompanist with degrees from Indiana University and the University of Memphis. Her performance career spans jazz, pop, and gospel, with appearances across the U.S. and in Rome and Paris. Katie teaches at Montclair State University and she was a dedicated student of Dr. Barry Harris for many years.
Saxophonist and educator David Glasser has played with jazz greats such as Clark Terry, Count Basie, Illinois Jacquet, and Barry Harris. Deeply committed to mentorship, he draws inspiration from his studies with Barry Harris and other elder musicians. David has taught at The New School for over 20 years and has helped shape many of today’s top jazz talents.
Andre “Chez” Lewis is a versatile pianist and music director blending jazz, gospel, classical, and pop styles. He is the current music director and pianist for Dionne Warwick and keyboardist for the Grammy-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. Chez was a protégé of Dr. Barry Harris and he continues to honor his legacy through performance and music education.
Isaac Raz is a New York-based musician and educator who studied extensively with Dr. Barry Harris in addition to his formal studies at Berklee College of Music and Lehman College. Isaac is in demand as a performer, arranger, and composer. He is also deeply involved in music education, passing on the lessons he learned from Dr. Harris.
Howard’s journey with Barry Harris began in 1978. His projects aimed at documenting the work of his mentor, have included his Toronto-based jazz workshop, now in its 41st year; The We Are One Jazz Project that brought Dr. Harris’ vocal compositions to over 4,000 young students over a 10-year period, and his widely acclaimed Barry Harris Workshop Video series that was dubbed the “Jazz Bible” by Tommy Flanagan.
Michael Weiss is a veteran jazz pianist, composer, and educator with a career spanning over 40 years. He has worked with jazz legends like Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, Barry Harris and the Heath Brothers, and he has headlined at major venues including the Village Vanguard and the Detroit Jazz Festival. Michael has taught at Indiana University, the Hartt College of Music, and Queens College, and he currently mentors students at the Tribeca Jazz Institute.
