Module 06: Improvisation – Scales Over Songs

The essence of Barry’s teaching of improvisation was his process of super imposing scales over the chord changes of songs to provide a blueprint for improvisational material. In class he would frequently come up with material for students to play within the context of a song, and assigning scales to every bar of a tune was the fundamental step to this approach.

The following are some of Barry’s favorite tunes that he would use over and over again to come up with material for improvisation. Included in each chart are the chord changes to the tunes as well as the scales that he would have students play to outline them.
